Liverpool target Parma defender Leoni in dual centre-back chase

Liverpool are considering a move for Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni whilst maintaining strong interest in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. The Reds face a strategic dual pursuit as defensive reinforcements become increasingly urgent ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.

Leoni, an 18-year-old defender who emerged as a breakthrough star in Serie A last season, has already earned call-ups to Italy's under-21 squad. Reports in Italy suggest the teenage centre-back would be available for €30 million (£26 million) plus bonuses, though Liverpool have not yet made direct contact with Parma.

The young defender made his professional debut at Padova in March 2023 when just 16 years old, before moving through Sampdoria and joining Parma for an initial €5 million last summer. Liverpool's pursuit has been accelerated by a defensive crisis that left them with just two senior centre-backs for Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace. Jarell Quansah's departure to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer and Joe Gomez's Achilles injury have significantly reduced Arne Slot's defensive options.

Liverpool remain keen on Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is also in the final year of his contract and has shown no inclination to negotiate a new agreement. Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted earlier this week that losing the player for nothing would be a "problem" and that Guehi could depart during the ongoing transfer window.
